Origin of the gold LEGO brick
Beginning in the late 1970s, the LEGO Group quietly commissioned solid 14-karat gold replicas of the iconic 2×4 brick to gift to employees marking 25 years with the company. Each gold LEGO brick weighs roughly 25.65 grams of pure 14k gold and was hand-finished in Denmark.
Why the 14k gold LEGO brick is so rare
Production of the gold brick was never commercial. Fewer than three dozen are believed to exist, and the vast majority remain in the hands of retired LEGO employees and their families. Public sales are exceptional; one example sold at auction for over $19,000, making it one of the most valuable LEGO collectibles ever to change hands.
How to identify a real gold LEGO brick
Genuine pieces bear the LEGO logo on each stud, the year ‘1979’ stamped on the side, and a hallmark indicating 14k gold purity. Modern reproductions and gold-plated novelties exist but lack the original tooling marks and the correct weight of solid gold.
