The first plastic
Until 1963, LEGO bricks were molded in cellulose acetate. The material gave early bricks a creamy warmth — but it also warped, shrank, and discolored over decades, making well-preserved examples increasingly scarce.
Why collectors care
Cellulose acetate bricks document the birth of the modern interlocking system. Mint examples in original boxes — particularly the 1955 Town Plan sets — are among the most coveted artifacts in LEGO history.
